The selections have been made for a regional all-star team that will compete in the provincial Division Two swimming championships at the Canada Games Complex in Thunder Bay Apr. 25-27.
Known as the Northwestern Ontario Starz, the team has drawn swimmers from the smaller clubs in the northwest region, including the Fort Frances Cyclone Swim Club, the Narwhals of Thunder Bay, the Nakokita Swim Club of Atikokan, and the Goldfins from Red Lake.
The other teams from the northwest region entered in this meet are the Thunder Bay Thunder Bolts, Kenora Swimming Sharks and Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim Team.
The Starz will compete in a total of 144 individual events and 14 relay events. The team will be led by Narwhals head coach David A. Iwanyszyn, who will be assisted by John Coughtry (Red Lake), Debbie Murray (Cyclones), and John Greanny (Atikokan).
Each team competing at the Division Two championships can bring a maximum of 30 swimmers. The Starz should be one of the smaller teams at the meet, but are expected to do well.
For some of the swimmers on this team, it will be a refreshing change because most are from small teams that do not have enough swimmers in each age group to even be on a relay team.
For a majority of the swimmers on this team, this will be the first time swimming in a long course pool and being on a selection team. Approximately 500 swimmers from across Ontario are expected to participate in the meet.
