Curves leads women’s soccer league

The defending champions are back in control.
Curves moved into first place with a 2-1 win over second-place Gillons’ on June 18—and maintained their lead this past week in women’s Borderland Soccer Association play.
Kate Basaraba had both goals for Curves (6-1) against Gillons’ while Susie Grynol had the lone goal in a losing cause (5-2).
Six different snipers hit the scoresheet for Curves in a 6-0 shutout over third-place Taggs (0-8) in a June 16 match-up.
Mandy Wilson, Lindsay Roy, Nicole Rogozinski, Basaraba, Rebecca Cornell, and Christine Noonan did the damage in that one.
Curves then downed Taggs by a 7-0 margin this past Thursday (June 26), with Wilson lighting up the cellar-dwellers for five tallies to take a commanding lead in the league goal-scoring race.
Rogozinski and Roy added singles.
Gillons’ also gave Taggs a rough ride over the past two weeks with a 3-0 win June 16 coupled with a 6-0 whitewash June 24.
Laureen Cousineau, Grynol, and Shannon Koval scored in the first game, and Cousineau came back to fire home two more in the second. Marina Boileau also had a pair in the return match, with Sarah Barton and Grynol adding singles.
The game scheduled June 25 between Curves and Gillons’ was cancelled due to a lack of players on either side because of graduation commitments and other circumstances.

Meanwhile, an uptempo Gillons’ squad continues to lead the way in men’s league action, although they did wind up on the wrong end of the scoreboard for the first time this season in a 2-1 loss to third-place Nova on June 24.
Steve Keesic and Kyle Perry had goals for Nova (4-3-1) while Jeremy Wilson replied for Gillons’ (6-1-1).
It was the only blemish on what has been an impressive season so far for Gillons’—made up mostly of this past season’s Muskie boys’ soccer squad.
The team tied defending champs Taggs 2-2 on June 16, with Wilson and Matt Basaraba getting the goals for their side. Olaf and Thor Ruppenstein had the markers for second-place Taggs (5-3-2).
Gillons’ went on to pound Nova 6-1 on June 18, with Adam and Kyle McTavish, Basaraba, Tyler Barker, Steve Hands, and Tanner Kaemingh each scoring singles for the winners.
Keesic netted the lone goal for Nova.
A lack of players for Taggs resulted in a 1-0 default victory for Gillons’ this past Thursday (June 26).
Taggs fattened itself up on last-place ITS in three-straight victories recently. A 9-1 win June 19 saw Eddy Louisy pick up a hat trick, while Thor and Olaf Ruppenstein each notched a pair.
Josiah Morris and Jim Nussbaumer added singles.
Dave Pierce’s penalty kick goal gave ITS (0-8) its first tally of the regular season.
Then after a 1-1 tie with Nova on June 23, with Mike Webb (Taggs) and Keesic (Nova) providing the offence, Taggs fought off a four-man disadvantage to squeeze by ITS 1-0 on June 25 on Webb’s goal late in the second half.
ITS brought a stronger all-around game to the table Sunday, but couldn’t contain Taggs’ own god of thunder as Thor Ruppenstein blasted home all three goals in a 3-0 shutout.
Nova also posted a 2-0 win over ITS on June 17, with Perry and Andy Hallikas getting the goals.
