The Fort Frances Curling Club will hold its annual registration night there this Monday (Sept. 17) starting at 7 p.m.
“The registration fees will be the same as they were last year, so we are encouraging everyone to come on out and register on Monday,” said Ron Silver, who chairs the curling committee.
“As well, we will be having our annual meeting following the registration process, which is something that we encourage our members to attend,” he added.
The first event of the season at the curling club is slated for Friday, Sept. 28 as the first-annual “Sticks and Stones” bonspiel takes place.
“We’re hoping this will become an annual event that will close off the golf season and kick off the curling season,” Silver explained.
“On the Friday night, we will have a draw at the curling club,” he noted.
“And then on Saturday, there will be a round of golf at Kitchen Creek before we return to the club for another draw of games.”
Regular league play is slated to begin Tuesday, Oct. 9, with the Monday night men’s league teams taking to the ice.
“We have them play on the Tuesday so that people won’t have to come out on the Thanksgiving Monday,” said Silver.
“Plus the Tuesday night league from International Falls doesn’t start their league for a couple more weeks, so that ice time is available.
“We will also have the ice going in earlier this year than we usually do,” he added. “So there will be a chance for free ice time during the week prior to the season starting up for anyone who wants to come out and give curling a try.”
This season also will see the annual men’s International bonspiel moved up from its regular February date to the weekend of Nov. 16-17, in addition to at least one NOCA event being held here this winter.
“The dates are still being confirmed as of right now, but we will be having the Dominion Region 1 club championships here for both men’s and women’s players in either late February or early March,” Silver said.
“We’re also hoping to have a couple of Bantam or youth challenges throughout the course of the season, but we will have to wait and see on that at this point,” he added.
