Curling club enjoyed successful season

The local curling club is coming off a successful season, which saw it attract 75-80 new members and build up both the mixed and business leagues.
And club president Bill Gushulak is hoping to add to those numbers next season.
Clearly the club’s biggest success was its drive to get new members, and it definitely would like to get the same type of response again this fall.
“We had a fair bit of successful programs this year but the one in which we had people, who had not been members since the new building come out for $100 [membership fee], worked for us,” noted Gushulak.
“We had several new members who were involved in some sort of capacity with our club and we hope to get more out next year,” he added.
Still, Gushulak admitted it’s not yet known whether the club will offer the same deal next season, noting that decision will be discussed at the summer board meeting.
On the financial side, Gushulak said the club “was able to hold their own” this past season due to the various new projects.
One successful first-time venture was the “Krazy Kurling” bonspiel earlier this month, featuring different games on each sheet of ice, which attracted some 80 people.
Organizers are optimistic the event will be even bigger and better next year.
“The ‘Krazy Kurling’ capped off a great year and it went off just super,” enthused Gushulak. “We had people who had played and wanted to sign up for next season right after.
“We had 80, which was nice, but we want to bring in another 24,” he added.
After doing a fine job hosting the provincial mixed playdowns last season, the club is preparing its bid to host the Northwestern men’s junior playdowns in December.
A decision is expected sometime this summer.
At the year-end awards banquet earlier this month, Kathie Jackson’s rink of Kim Beaudry, Kelly Wagar, Stacy Beacham, and Roz Broman captured the grand aggregate for the women’s league.
The men’s grand aggregate winner was the rink of skip Raymond Roy and Tim Nordin, Scott Gobeil, Clint Barton, and Mike Kjerulf.
The ‘A’ club champion for the women was Tracy Coran’s foursome of Mary Beth Tkachuk, Kerri Tolen, and Doris Barton while Roy’s rink captured the men’s ‘A’ crown.
Paula Grandaw’s rink of Theone Bernard, Maxine Werner, and Bert Karasek was the women’s ‘B’ club winners while the men’s ‘B’ championship was won by Ken McKinnon, Harry Bell, Sandy Haney, and Trevor McKinnon.
The women’s ‘C’ club winner was the foursome of Florence Ogden, Delores Eyolfson, Sylvia Gunderson, and Becky Bell while Steve Briggs’ rink of Tom Drouillard, John Kehler, and Brian Beers won the men’s ‘C’ title.
The mixed league was won by Bruce Matheson, Kim Matheson, Howard Bobczynski, and Marna Martin while Tyler Bell’s rink of Robbie Matheson, Kayle Koval, and James Asplund captured the junior title.
