The Armstrong Crushers snagged the highest finish of any local team at a novice hockey tournament held here over the weekend.
Armstrong downed the Fine Foods Fury 7-2 in the ‘C’ final to finish the tournament on a winning note.
The Crushers had finished the round-robin portion with a 1-2 mark, beating the DST Penguins 5-1 before losing 4-2 to the Dryden Chargers and then 4-0 to the Neebing Devils.
Armstrong then downed the KFD Hounds 6-2 to meet the Fury in the final.
Fine Foods, meanwhile, went 0-1-2 in the round-robin, tying both Taggs and the Emo Loggers 3-3 while falling 6-3 to the Dryden Vipers.
The Fury then edged the Times Tigers 6-4 to earn the berth in the ‘C’ final.
Taggs had a strong showing as well, advancing to the ‘B’ final before suffering a 1-0 shootout heartbreaker to the Loggers.
Taggs finished the round-robin with a 1-1-1 record, beating the Vipers 4-3, tying the Fury 3-3, and losing 7-1 to the Chargers.
They then blanked Atikokan 3-0 to advance to the ‘B’ final.
Meanwhile, Skates & Blades stayed on the ‘A’-side but fell just short of the championship game, losing 8-5 to the Chargers to be eliminated from further contention.
Skates & Blades had won all three of their round-robin games, downing the Loggers 5-1, the Hounds 8-2, and Atikokan 4-3.
The Times Tigers finished 0-2-1 in the round-robin, tying Atikokan 1-1 but losing 3-1 to the Devils and 5-2 to the Penguins.
The Tigers then fell 6-4 to the Fury.
