Fort Frances Youth Soccer is in jeopardy of not going ahead next season if not enough parent volunteers step up.
A large portion of our current board is stepping away from youth soccer to pursue other volunteer interests.
We only had one member on the board last season who had a player in the youth soccer league and NorWOSSA.
All the other volunteers had no children involved with the club.
To make a club like FFYS run effectively, it requires more than the two-three people who will be left on the board—all of whom have no children left in the club.
It is a large commitment for a short amount of time from the board members. However, if you recall the sign hanging in the Memorial Sports Centre, “volunteerism is the rent we pay for a good community.”
There are many aspects to running the club that many parents can help out with if they do not have the time to attend all the meetings.
Some of the duties include the shack needing to be unlocked four nights of the week and locked up, teams needing to be made for all the divisions, and registration nights having to be organized and conducted.
Coaches also need to be recruited and Ontario Soccer Association paperwork has to be taken care of, among other responsibilities.
Many of these duties can be shared among parents.
FFYS, an affiliation of Soccer Northwestern Ontario (SNO) and the OSA, has run successfully without a president and vice-president in the past.
There just needs to be a core group of parents willing to work together to keep the club continuing.
When one looks back to see how many years the club has been running, and all the soccer programs currently being offered in Fort Frances, all of it only is possible because the organizers and competitive coaches began their soccer career at the St. Francis/Struchan Gilson pitches with FFYS.
Please consider giving your time to the children’s soccer program by attending our information meeting tomorrow (Dec. 9) at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room at the Memorial Sports Centre.
