Court teams take three

Holes in the middle are for doughnuts, not the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team.
With the squad’s two starters at the middle position unavailable for the match, a cast of fill-ins more than ably handled the job as part of the Muskies sweep of the host Kenora Broncos (25-13, 25-12, and 25-12) in NorWOSSA action yesterday.
Fort High improved to 4-3 to remain in second place while the Broncos fell to 0-7.
With the Eagles having locked up top spot, the two squads will clash in the semi-final showdown at the NorWOSSA playoffs Feb. 20 in Dryden.
“Hailey McEvoy did a great job stepping into the middle and played two solid sets,” lauded Muskie co-coach Jason Cain.
“Both Cassandra Moffitt and Carly Taggart moved over into the middle position to [also] fill the gap and [the team] did not skip a beat,” he added.
“It felt like they had been playing the middle all season, running quicks and slides effortlessly.”
Meanwhile, the Muskie junior girls also swept the Broncos (25-19, 25-21, and 25-20) to improve to 7-0 while keeping Kenora winless at 0-7.
On the basketball court, Fort High (6-1) inched closer to wrapping up top spot—and an automatic berth to the NorWOSSA final—after downing the winless Broncos 56-48 yesterday.
Top scorers for both teams were unavailable at press time.
But the Muskie junior boys (0-7) couldn’t make it a clean sweep, falling 44-39 to Kenora.
“We ended up getting ourselves in foul trouble early with Cole [Kowalski], Sekina [Scheibler], and Josh Cousineau with three each by halftime,” recalled co-coach Mike Krueger.
“We were able to use the whole bench to hopefully add some confidence to the first-year players’ abilities to help out in Dryden [for the playoffs],” he added.
Kowalski paced the Muskies with 10 points while Scheibler added seven.
Both Muskie volleyball squads are in Thunder Bay for tournaments starting today.
The senior basketball team, meanwhile, heads back to Kenora today for a tournament.
The Muskies then will close their regular seasons here Tuesday against Dryden, with action getting underway at noon.
