Amy Wilson-Hands’ heavy-handed collective served up a heaping dish of disarray to the Kenora Broncos.
With some top-flight work behind the service line, the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team powered past the Broncos 3-1 (27-25, 25-10, 22-25, and 25-11) in NorWOSSA action Tuesday at Fort High.
Fort High (5-1) moved into sole possession of first place–and can clinch a bye to the league final here next Friday (Feb. 17) with either a win today over the host Dryden Eagles (4-3) or on Monday on the road against the Broncos (1-6).
“The key to winning the game today [Tuesday] was aggressive serving, which caused their serve-receive to be a bit chaotic,” noted Wilson-Hands, whose team was coming off a big weekend by capturing the St. Patrick Volleyball Festival in Thunder Bay.
But that doesn’t mean Wilson-Hands was all smiles about the victory.
“Our communication was lacking as well as our intensity,” she stressed.
“It was hard to get something going.”
The Muskie junior girls’ squad also drew closer to a bye to the league final by sweeping the Broncos 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, and 25-16) on Tuesday.
That sets up a showdown between first-place Fort High (5-1) and second-place Dryden (5-2) today, with the Muskies able to lock up first place with a win.
A loss will force the black-and-gold to win their regular-season finale on Monday in Kenora against the winless Broncos (0-7) and then hope their sets won/lost differential ends up higher than Dryden’s.
Right now, Fort High is +10 in that category while Dryden is +7.
In boys’ basketball action here Tuesday, the senior Muskies stayed in contention for first place by crushing Kenora 74-35.
Aaron Bujold had three three-pointers in the first half on the way to a game-high 20 points for Fort High (4-2), which can claim first place with wins today over Dryden (5-2) and Monday over Kenora (1-6) to close out the regular season.
Cole Kowalski drained 12 points in the first quarter en route to finishing with 19 while Liam Metke chipped in seven.
Kenora avoided being swept by nipping the Muskie junior boys’ squad 51-50 five days after handing Fort High its first league win of the season.
Kolbi White-Loon, who was shut out in the first half, roared back with 14 points for Kenora (4-3) after the break.
Nine of those came in the fourth quarter, including the winning basket in the final minute.
The Muskies (1-5) turned the ball over on the next possession, then forgot to foul to stop the clock–allowing the Broncos the chance to pass the ball around until time expired.
Sean Huziak wound up with a game-high 22 points to set a new team standard for a single game this season.
Garrett Hyatt added 12 while Mike Vanderaa sank two three-pointers as part of a 10-point outing.
The juniors also play in Dryden today against the Eagles (5-2).
