The Muskie senior and junior boys’ basketball teams both tipped off their NorWOSSA seasons with victories over the host Kenora Broncos yesterday.
The juniors, led by Dustin Eyolfson’s 14 points, coasted to a 34-11 victory.
“We’re just playing half-court man with a little bit of pressure,” junior coach Greg Ste. Croix said by phone immediately following the win.
“Trying to keep it as simple as possible in the early going.”
The senior boys had a tougher go of it, but still pulled out a 41-36 victory yesterday.
Garnet Cornell led the Muskie attack with 11 points while Travis Stromness added 10 and Justin Anderson seven.
In related news, the seniors host their home tournament this Friday and Saturday at the “Fish Tank.”
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team finished off the host Broncos in four sets (22-25, 25-10, 25-23, and 25-13) while the junior girls pulled out a five-set victory (25-22, 20-25, 25-14, 23-25, and 15-13).
“It’s really positive to get a win in our first league action,” senior coach Duane Roen enthused.
“We’ve been playing well, but it should be a good test next Tuesday in Dryden,” he added. “They [the Eagles] are always strong in volleyball, so we’ll see how we stack up against them.”
The seniors also were in Dryden for the “Santa Claus Classic” over the weekend, losing to Sioux Lookout in the semi-finals in three sets (18-25, 25-18, 15-17).
The black-and-gold had earned a bye to the semis with nine set wins against three losses in the round-robin portion, but then fell short in the medal round.
