It was a tough road trip for the Muskie court teams in Dryden yesterday.
The senior girls’ basketball team (4-3) fell 50-36 to the host Eagles and now can finish no better than second place in NorWOSSA play, with the regular-season finale set for Tuesday here against Kenora.
“They [Dryden] had a big first quarter, jumped out to a 19-10 lead, and we couldn’t recover,” Muskie coach Ian Simpson said. “In terms of half-court offence, we’re doing OK, but we’re having trouble handling the press and getting into our offence.”
Lauren Gurski and Taylor Meyers once again led the way offensively with 13 and 12 points, respectively, but Simpson noted Jolene Stahn played a big role defensively and in the rebounding department.
The junior girls’ basketball team also fell to 4-3 with a 30-26 loss to the Eagles yesterday.
“We kind of had a rough first quarter. We had lots of shooting opportunities, but we were missing shots under the basket and they just weren’t going in for us,” Muskie co-coach Sarah Noonan conceded.
“We seemed to be working our offence and things were happening, but the ball wasn’t going in.”
Erika Moffitt had a team-high eight points.
Despite the loss, if the juniors can beat Kenora in their regular-season finale here Tuesday, they will end up tied for first with Dryden at 5-3. It then will go to points for and against to decide which team gets the bye to the NorWOSSA final.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior and junior boys’ volleyball teams will be looking to get their first wins of the season when they host Kenora on Tuesday.
Both were swept in Dryden yesterday to fall to 0-7.
The seniors lost by scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-14 while the juniors fell 25-12, 25-22, and 25-12.
