Cota falls short

Wyatt Cota’s December was a good one—but not good enough to match up with the SIJHL’s most dangerous offensive weapon right now.
The 20-year-old Kingston native was under consideration for the Gongshow Gear performer-of-the-month award after collecting five goals and four assists in seven games for the Fort Frances Lakers.
But Dryden GM Ice Dogs’ forward Cole Golka was in a class by himself in winning the award for the second time in three months.
Golka destroyed opposing netminders to the tune of 14 goals and six assists in eight games to capture the honour.
The Dryden ace leads the SIJHL in points with 51, two more than Matthias Gardiman of the Thunder Bay North Stars.
And his 32 goals are 12 more than the next-best shooter in Nicholas Nigro (North Stars).
Cota currently is sixth in league scoring with 15 goals and 20 assists in 28 games.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are back in action tomorrow night after the two-week holiday break when the Ice Dogs visit the Ice For Kids Arena at 7:30 p.m.
League-leading Fort Frances (22-7-1) leads second-place Thunder Bay (18-11-4) by five points while also holding three games in hand.
The Lakers have won five-straight and 12 of their past 14 in what has been their best stretch of success so far this season.
Dryden (16-13-2) sits in fourth place with 34 points, two back of the third-place Minnesota Iron Rangers (16-10-4).
The Ice Dogs also are on a roll, having won three in a row and six of their past seven.
