The commissioner of the Superior International Junior Hockey League, (SIJHL) Darrin Nicholas is investigating after a Red Lake Miners’ player allegedly made a taunting gesture towards the Fort Frances Lakers.
Nicholas says it’s still early in his investigation, and having reviewed game video didn’t see anything obvious, but he’s still looking into it.
“I’m still reaching out to people who witnessed it,” Nicholas said. “But this is the kind of thing we’re trying to get out of the game – and we’d like in-game officials to call.”
A post from a fan on the Lakers Facebook page refers to a witness report of “classless taunting.”
Lakers president Gary Silander said, “There was some tasteless taunting, but to the best of my knowledge, the league is going to take a look at it.”
The Lakers lost the game 5-2 and currently sit at the bottom of the SIJHL standings. They play again Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Central Time against the Kam River Walleye in Thunder Bay, before a weekend home series against the Dryden GM Ice Dogs.
