It would have been impossible not to have at least one home team in the final.
But it was more fun to have two.
The Fort Frances Fire ‘n Ice Volleyball Club’s U14 girls’ group finished its season by having two of its squads meet in the final of a four-team mini-tournament at J.W. Walker School on Saturday.
As it turned out, Fire ‘n Ice Royals emerged victorious over Fire ‘n Ice Blue by a count of 2-0 (25-9/25-23).
The Royals had a 5-1 sets record in the round-robin, the same as Blue.
But the eventual champs got the nod for first place having given up less points than Blue did when the teams split their round-robin meeting.
Blue won the first set 25-23, with the Royals nabbing the second one 25-19.
The Royals also swept Fire ‘n Ice Development (25-22/25-18) and the Dryden Whiskey Jacks (25-16/25-15).
In the semi-finals, the Royals looked strong at times and not so much at others in a 2-0 win (25-16/25-12).
Blue, meanwhile, battled to get past Development (25-23/25-14) before holding off the Whiskey Jacks (25-21/28-26) in its other round-robin matches.
Blue took on Dryden again in the semi-finals, with the three-set thriller going the way of the host squad (25-13, 25-27, and 15-12).
Development lost both sets to Dryden (25-23/25-18) in the round-robin.
The Whiskey Jacks grabbed third place in the standings with a 2-4 sets record, compared to Development in fourth (0-6).
