Press Release
The Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists is a unique local, nature-based organization which developed a constitution on Jan. 1, 2000.
Its mission statement reads: “The Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists promote appreciation, conservation, and the wise use of our natural environment in the Rainy River Valley.”
Our naturalist club is a member of Ontario Nature, which promotes conservation and healthy ecosystems in nature.
Our club, along with others throughout Ontario, participate in projects that promote biodiversity in our province.
One of our major projects has been the development of the Cranberry Peatlands Interpretive Trail in Alberton Township.
This self-guided nature trail is a significant wetland area which lies only about seven km northwest of town at the west end of Whitmore Road.
Our club provides two pamphlets for the public at no cost. One features trees and plants found in a bog while the other is a colour pamphlet of birds that are found in a wetland area.
Meetings are held at the Rainy River Future Development Corp. office at 608 Scott St. in Fort Frances on the first Wednesday of each month from September through April (except for December and January).
Our meetings feature various speakers on different topics.
Outdoor events include nature hikes, birding trips, and canoe trips.
Membership fees are $20 per year per person, or $40 per family.
One of our goals at present is to add new members to ensure the club will thrive and be able to carry out the objectives of our mission statement.
Anyone wishing to join our club is asked to contact RRVFN president Ahlan Johanson at 274-7056.
