The Muskie cheerleading squad is hoping to see a number of new faces on the team this year, and it has a couple of new faces on the coaching staff, as well.
Angie Tyrvainen, a former Muskie cheerleader, and Jessica Roehrig, a cheerleader from St. Ignatius in Thunder Bay, will be joining Joyce Scott and head coach Gillian Piccinato with this year’s squad.
Scott has been involved with the team for the last 20 years, but is looking to groom a new generation of coaches to lead the squad going forward.
Camp opened yesterday with nine returning members, although Scott hopes to see a solid crew of about 20 by the time tryouts wrap up next Thursday (Oct. 7).
“I’m hoping to see a few more numbers to help bring our program back up again,” said Scott, noting both males and females are invited to attend.
Tryouts are slated from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the large gym at Fort High.
Scott noted the squad will work on new cheers, jumps, and stunts throughout the school year, adding that getting all participants to work in cohesion is crucial.
“We want to be really be team-oriented,” she stressed.
“I think it’s going to be a good year, I really do, with the new assistant coaches helping,” Scott added.
“We’ll have different ideas from the different girls.”
