The second-annual RBC Charity Golf Classic had a harder time generating interest in its second go-around from a summer ago, but still managed to raise $5,000 for a local charity.
Money raised from the event went to the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, directly contributing to the Fort Frances chemotherapy program.
Nineteen teams of four paid $125 per person to take part in the event at Kitchen Creek Golf Course, down from 36 a year ago, but the weather cooperated and made for a fun event regardless.
“We had about half the teams that we had hoped for, but next year we’re looking at a full slate,” local RBC branch manager Heather Johnson said. “We got a bit of a late start this year but it was still a wonderful time.”
The team of Garry Windego, Clayton Windego, Tom Windego, and Andrew Easton won the tournament in a playoff after a three-way tie through 18 holes. When things were still undecided after two extra playoff holes, the teams faced off in a chipping contest to decide the winner.
“Everybody was out on the deck watching the final so it was quite exciting,” Johnson said. “There were three really good teams playing who made for an exciting finish.”
The winning team received automotive GPS systems, while the second place team of Jeff and Heather Wright, Brad Oster, and Greg Ward took home portable DVD players.
The team of Dan Henderson, Deane Cunningham, Wayne Woods, and Larry Cousineau finished third and received iPods for their efforts.
“We had really good prizes and support from the local sponsors was huge,” Johnson praised. “The golfers seemed very happy, and we had a great barbeque chicken supper and prize draws afterwards.”
A hole-in-one $10,000 prize offered up by Royal Bank was also on the table, but nobody could pull off an ace.
Other prize winners in the extra competitions were:
•Closest to the line on hole eight—Tom Kinsman for the men and Linda Sekulich for the women;
•Closest to the pin on hole nine—Brian Beers and Kate Bondett;
•Longest drive—Harry Klyne and Megan Ross;
•Chipping contest—Andrew Easton; and
• Putting contest—Andrew Easton
