Centre extending hours

The Memorial Sports Centre will be open additional hours this summer to better serve patrons.
Town council agreed to the recommendation of the Community Services executive committee to sanction five additional hours of weekend operation in the fitness area of the facility.
This includes the aerobic room, weight room, squash courts, change rooms, and saunas, but excluding the pool.
The centre, which currently is operating on summer hours (i.e., closed Saturdays and open Sundays from 4-8 p.m.), now will be open Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon and Sunday from 3-8 p.m.
These five extra hours will have an estimated cost of $90.89/weekend or $908.90 for the summer.
The change in hours was requested by some gym members, at least one of whom suggested the sports centre loses patrons every summer due to a lack of weekend hours, Community Services manager Jason Kabel told the Times.
“We’ll see if we can make it a more accessible facility on the weekends for our members,” he noted.
The additional hours will be on a trial basis.
Attendance numbers will be kept on file throughout the summer to assess the success of the expanded weekend hours, said Kabel.
Traditionally, the sports centre has reduced hours starting the second week in June until the weekend after Labour Day.
