When the spotlight was at its peak, Jess Caul shone through.
The Fort Frances native was named tournament MVP after leading the Providence University College Pilots to their third-straight Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference women’s soccer championship over the weekend in Otterburne.
Caul scored twice in Saturday’s 6-0 semi-final victory over the fourth-seeded Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (Winnipeg) and was named player of the game.
Then in Sunday’s final, Caul’s hustle factored in greatly as Jessica Gzebb’s first-half marker was all Providence needed in a 1-0 shutout of the second-ranked Red River College Rebels (Winnipeg).
The Pilots now are gearing up for a trip to Minneapolis, where they already have locked up a berth in Wednesday’s final of the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association’s Central region championship, which is scheduled to start at noon.
Providence will play the winner of today’s semi-final between the North Central University Rams (Minneapolis) and the Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles (Ankeny, Iowa).
A win Wednesday would mean a second-straight appearance for the Pilots in the NCCAA Division II national women’s championship in Kissimmee, Fla. from Nov. 12-15.
Providence captured bronze at last year’s nationals.
