Sporting even more teams than last year, the eighth-annual “Castin’ for Cash” fishing tournament at Lake Despair Lodge north of Devlin kicks off Friday with a 7:30 a.m. take-off.
The two-day derby has weigh-ins at 3:30 p.m. both days, and also will feature a fish fry on Friday night and taped music by Warren Anderson on Saturday. Food booths and refreshments will also be available on both days.
“I just talked to last year’s champion [LeRoy Wilson], and he said they’ve been [biting] a little slow the last couple days but he’s been pre-fishing so he hopes he has enough figured out,” tournament host and lodge owner Bill Godin said.
LeRoy and his son, Mike, won the tournament last year with a two-day haul of 27.12 pounds—enough to hold off perennial second-place finishers Pat Steele and Ralph Galusha, who finished second back-to-back years.
Godin said it will take a similar tally again this year to repeat.
“It’s usually about the same every year, about 26 pounds, somewhere in that neighbourhood,” Godin noted. “Water levels are definitely a little high which might change things from last year.
“It’s good for us up here because we need it in the pull through [bringing boats up], which makes things run a little bit smoother,” he added.
This year’s “Castin’ for Cash” has a total of 65 teams registered—up from 59 a year ago.
