‘Canes open season with win

A rematch of last year’s championship final was the featured game as the Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League opened its new season yesterday evening.
And the Fort Frances Her-icanes again came out on top against the Red Gut Babes–this time by a score of 21-16.
Newcomer Sarah Noonan looked sharp in her debut for the ‘Canes, tossing a strong three innings before making way for veteran reliever Laureen Hill and then first-time pitcher Nat Dal.
The Babes took the lead in the sixth against Dal, forcing Hill to go back on the mound to hold the line.
She did so well enough to let the ‘Canes retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth, then shut down the Babes in the seventh.
Red Gut starter Alyssa Windego threw a complete game in a losing cause.
In the upset of the night, the Fort Frances Angels took a big step toward erasing memories of last year’s 14-game losing streak to end the season by downing the Dawson Tigers 19-15.
Sara Jackson, who went 0-6 on the mound last season, triumphed in her season debut for the Angels with the aid of home runs by Rylee Redford and former Big Island all-star Rochelle Jack off losing pitcher Alicia Anderson.
Another ex-Wildcat, Candace Handorgan, was terrific on the mound yesterday as she and the Big Grassy Lynx battled the Northwest Bay Beavers to a 6-6 tie.
Handorgan, Roxanne Handorgan, and Allison Finlayson originally were slated to join the Manitou T-Birdies, but opted this past week to join Big Grassy instead for reasons of shorter travel.
Darcy Smith went the full seven innings on the mound while Shae Smith picked up where she left off last year by crushing her first home run of the season for the Beavers.
With new pitcher and league MVP Tracy Morningstar unavailable, and Summer Leonard not arriving until the fifth inning due to work commitments, the T-Birdies still put in a game effort before falling 19-11 to the Emo Renegades.
Mykenzie Borger tossed a complete-game victory for the Renegades over Bev Cochrane of the T-Birdies.
Finally, the Couchiching Lady Raiders beat Sabaskong Tebinaak 12-7, with Sydney Jones earning the pitching win over Candy Kelly.
League action resumes tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., with Couchiching hosting the ‘Canes while the Angels welcome Manitou at the St. Francis Sports Field north diamond.
The Fort Frances Mud Dogs get their first shot on the field after having a bye Monday when they visit the Beavers.
Other games will see Emo in Red Gut while Dawson heads to Big Grassy.
