Another year, another title for the Fort Frances Her-icanes.
Despite a late rally, the third-seeded Her-icanes were able to hold off the top-ranked Renegades 2-1 last night to claim their fourth-straight Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League crown at the St. Francis Sports Field.
With the ‘Canes leading 2-0 heading into the seventh inning, Gina Pope came through with an RBI single to trim it to 2-1 and make things interesting but starter Marissa Kerry buckled down and got the next two outs to secure the title for Fort Frances.
Kerry tossed a complete game two-hitter to nab the win over Karma Andy, who was solid over six innings despite giving up the two runs.
Meanwhile, the Rainy River District Fastball League title could be decided tonight as the East Division champion Fort Frances Braves and West Division champ Barwick Blue Knights clash in Game 2 of the best-of-three championship series at Couchiching.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Braves have their backs to the wall and are looking to stave off elimination after dropping the opener 9-5 last Thursday night in Barwick.
A possible third-and-deciding game would also go at Couchiching, with the date still to be determined.
