Canadians win tourney

The Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ team went undefeated in all five of their games at the Breezy Point Icefest tournament in Pequot Falls, Mn.
The Canadians captured the tournament title thanks to a 6-1 victory over host Pequot Falls High School on Sunday.
Kirk Petrin and Matt Beck each scored in the first period to give the Fort Frances crew a 2-0 lead.
Brandon Roden, Brian Glavish, Boyd Badiuk, and George Ossachuk all tallied in the second to seal the win.
The Canadians had opened action with an 18-0 romp over Walker, Mn. (it should be noted, though, that Walker lost their regular goalie a week prior to the tournament and were forced to replace him with a player who had never tended goal before in his life).
On the other hand, Kyle Goertzen turned in stellar goaltending performances after he blanked St. Pierre, S.D. 8-0 and then Albert Lea, Mn. 7-0.
Fort Frances then earned a berth in the tourney final with a 7-1 win over Aberdeen, S.D.
The Canadians will be looking to keep up their winning ways when they host the Junior Gold ‘A’ team from Duluth, Mn. in exhibition action on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. and again Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
This showdown is said to be a great opportunity for the Canadians as the competition and calibre of play will be on par with the Midget ‘AA’ level.
