The Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ squad used four second-period goals to down the International Falls Broncos junior varsity team 6-1 here last night.
Brad McDonald opened the scoring at 7:15 of the first, finally converting his third legitimate chance of the shift by tipping a Ryan Lundy slap-pass behind Broncos’ goalie Billy Bright.
Bronco defenceman Mike Misner curled the puck off the boards and wristed a shot over Canadians’ goalie James Wallin to tie it at 10:47.
The Canadians regained their lead for good before the period was through, though, when Dylan Grinsell tapped in a puck that had fluttered over Bright into the crease.
In the second, Fort Frances began to take control early on as Tyler Fontana was sent in on a breakaway by Brandon Sinclair and beat Bright to bump the Canadians’ lead to 3-1.
McDonald’s second of the game stemmed from an impressive play. Busting in 3-on-1, Terran Romyn got Bright moving cross-crease by passing to Jeff Gustafson, who fed immediately to McDonald for the easy tic-tac-toe tap-in.
Chris Bobcyznski then got in on the action, tapping in a rebound after Ryder Woolsey’s rocket rang off the crossbar.
Sinclair rounded out the scoring with 30 seconds left in the period, throttling a shot past Bright into the low left-hand corner.
The third period was scoreless.
The Canadians next will travel to Grand Rapids, Mn. tomorrow to take on the junior varsity team there.
Their next tournament is slated Jan. 29-31 in Grand Forks, N.D.
