The Fort Frances Canadians continued their strong play of late, finishing third at the annual “Spirit of Duluth” hockey tournament over the weekend.
The Canadians dug themselves an early hole, losing 3-1 to Minnetonka in their opening round-robin game Friday morning.
Josh Scott scored their lone marker.
Fort Frances then earned a slightly better result—a 3-3 tie—that night against Eden Prairie.
Kyle Herr netted a pair of goals in that one while Dayton Brown added the other.
The tie meant the Canadians had to beat Marquette by four or more goals in their final round-robin match Saturday morning—and have Minnetonka beat Eden Prairie—if they were to advance to the third-place game.
The Canadians held up their end of the bargain by skating to a 4-0 win over Marquette thanks to tallies by Scott, Ryan Shortreed, and Herr, who scored a pair for the second time in three games.
Minnetonka, meanwhile, kept the Canadians’ tournament hopes alive when they beat Eden Prairie—setting up a showdown with Duluth in the third-place game.
The Canadians were trailing Duluth 4-2 with just over four minutes left in the third period when Matthew Beck scored to cut the lead to a goal.
Then with less than a minute remaining in regulation time, the Canadians pulled their goalie in favour of the extra attacker.
And the gamble paid off as Herr scored the game-tying goal with 19 seconds to go to force overtime.
In the extra frame, Tyler Harris completed the Canadians’ comeback by scoring on a slick three-way passing play to give his team the 5-4 overtime victory.
The Canadians see their next action Dec. 21 when they travel to Ely to face the Timberwolves.
