One down and the Fort Frances Canadians already are down one.
The Canadians fell 6-1 to the North Bay Trappers yesterday in their first game in the Bantam ‘AAA’ division at the Ontario Hockey Federation Championships in Thunder Bay.
North Bay led 2-0 after the first period on tallies by Ben Brunette and Jesse Kirkby (power play), then burned the Canadians for four more in the second, including two short-handed goals 2:47 apart.
Eric Lafontaine had two goals in the middle frame, with Joe Jordan and Kirkby each getting one.
Carter Armstrong had the lone marker for the Canadians, whose roster actually is comprised of players from Fort Frances and elsewhere in the region.
Isaac Fagnilli made 13 saves to take the loss.
The Canadians have two chances to get back on track today–facing the York-Simcoe Express and then the Toronto Marlboros.
Fort Frances needs to finish in the top four out of the seven participating teams to make it into Friday’s semi-finals, with the gold- and bronze-medal games to be held later that day.
