Canadians again fall short in final

The Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ squad had another strong showing over the weekend.
Unfortunately, the result was eerily similar to their championship final loss the previous week.
The Canadians fell 4-2 to the Minnetonka Warriors in the final of the “Spirit of Duluth” tournament on Sunday—right on the heels of having lost 3-2 to Wayzata in the final of their home tournament back on Nov. 30.
Brandon Legarie accounted for the Canadians’ scoring, with linemates Jordan Sinclair and Nathan Calder assisting on both goals.
Wes Brown, meanwhile, started his third game of the tournament in goal and suffered his only loss.
The Canadians had opened the tournament with a 6-3 victory over the Bloomington Jefferson Jr. Gold. Sinclair and Tim Sharp netted two apiece while Jake Witherspoon and Cole Calder added the others.
Sinclair also notched two assists.
The local crew then doubled the Stillwater Jr. Gold by a 4-2 score. Brad McDonald had a goal and an assist in that one while Sinclair, Sharp, and Witherspoon netted singles.
The Canadians wrapped up their perfect round-robin with a lopsided 9-2 win over the Calumet Ice Kings.
Ryan Lundy exploded for four goals and two assists, with Jeff Gustafson, Cole Calder, Brett Bodnarchuk, McDonald, and Colin Barton tallying the goals.
James Wallin earned the win in his lone start between the pipes.
The local squad also captured the team sportsmanship award for the tournament—the first time a Canadians team had been honoured in such fashion since 1994.
The Canadians played in Ely, Mn. last night (the outcome was unavailable as of press time), then they’ll host the Northwestern Ontario ‘AAA’ Bantam all-stars this Sunday (Dec. 14) at 3:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
