Bulldogs set to host tourney

The first fastball tournament of the season is set to start tomorrow at Couchiching, but the host Bulldogs didn’t get the turnout they had hoped for.
Just five of the eight teams competing are Rainy River District Fastball League squads—the Bull-dogs, Hyatt’s Construction, Sight and Sound, Barwick Blue Knights, and Big Island.
The other three are made up of mixed teams from around the region.
The Bulldogs originally wanted 12 teams, including established squads from Dryden, Kakabeka Falls, Winnipeg, and Fargo, N.D., to play this weekend but couldn’t get an official word from them in time.
“We were hoping to [get more teams] but it’s been kind of tough,” said Bulldogs shortstop Brent Tookenay. “That’s the problem with the sport, no one wants to travel.:
Teams will be split into two pools of four, with round-robin play beginning tomorrow morning. Playoff rounds go Sunday.
A social will be held at the Legion on Saturday starting at 9 p.m.
The Bulldogs, who moved to Couchiching from Emo in the offseason, have yet to play a game there.
“Everything is ready. We’ve got a new outfield wall, bases,” said Tookenay.
This will be the first tournament the Bulldogs have hosted in two years. They traditionally have held this tournament on Labour Day weekend.
In RRDFL games from last night, Rainy River improved to a league-best 7-1 record after beating Hyatt’s (1-2-1) 15-7.
Second-place Big Island (3-1-1) tied Sight and Sound (2-1-2) 3-3 at VanJura Stadium here, Pinewood (3-3) beat Barwick (3-3) 10-8, and Stratton (1-5) earned its first win of the season after edging winless Big Grassy (0-6) 5-4.
