Broncos win first Muskie girls’ hockey tournament

The Fort Frances Muskie girls’ hockey team staged its first-ever tournament over the weekend.
The home squad, along with the Kenora Broncos, St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora), and Sioux Lookout Warriors, played a four-team round-robin, with the finals held yesterday afternoon.
The Broncos cruised through the tournament undefeated, earning the gold medal with a 5-2 victory over the Muskies.
The black-and-gold had opened play Friday night with an exciting 5-3 loss to the Broncos, then posted a pair of victories Saturday—5-1 over St. Thomas Aquinas and 10-0 versus Sioux Lookout.
That set up Sunday afternoon’s rematch between the Muskies and Broncos for the tournament title.
Sarah O’Sullivan opened scoring at 9:37 of the first period, getting assists from sister, Danielle (who captained the team this weekend), and Hannah Firth.
Kenora stormed back to take a 3-1 lead before Lauren Krukoski (from Kailey Curtis) cut the lead to 3-2 at the second intermission.
But the Broncos sealed the win with a pair of goals in the third period.
Of note, the Muskie line of Sarah O’Sullivan, Miranda Kellar, and Taylor Meyers combined for 23 points over the weekend to lead the team.
Next up on the Muskie girls’ schedule is an eight-team invitational tournament this weekend at the Allard Arena in Winnipeg.
