Bowman sails to spring series title

Ron Bowman has been front-running almost the whole season, so there was no reason to think things would change in the season finale.
Bowman steered “In Tune” to a fourth consecutive victory to clinch the title as the Rendezvous Yacht Club’s Wednesday night spring series champion.
After registering two seconds and a third in his first three outings, Bowman found the magic touch upon the waves and was unbeatable the rest of the way, winning the July 9 finale in a time of 37:55 to beat Quinn McCarthy and “Sedna,” who clocked a mark of 38:56.
Colin Hewitt and “Ariba” were third in a time of 39:08, while Todd Hamilton and “Through,”, who started the spring series with back-to-back wins, came in fourth in 39:13.
The Wednesday night fall series begins tonight at 6:30 p.m., heading out across Sand Bay from the La Place Rendez-Vous hotel dock.
McCarthy did earn a modicum of revenge this past weekend, winning the Mermaid Rock Race for his third straight Saturday series victory.
Light winds didn’t deter McCarthy from holding off Hewitt, who caught a burst of fresh air in his sails to make a late charge but couldn’t close the gap entirely.
The absent breeze forced Bowman, Hamilton and Bob Algie on “Kemosabe” out of the running before they could complete the race.
Any member of the public wishing to try sailing is invited to Woody’s dock in Rainier on July 22 and July 29 at 6:30 p.m. for the yacht club’s community sail nights.
