Bowlers finish in third place

Six Fort Frances bowlers helped the Sunset Country team earn a third-place finish overall at the Northern Ontario 5-pin Open Provincial Championships held in North Bay over the Easter weekend.
The big news came in the mixed division as the Sunset Country squad, including local bowler Andrew Stamarski, captured the silver medal after falling to Cambrian North (Sudbury) in the final of the stepladder competition.
Sunset Country, which sat in fourth place after the 15-game preliminary round, beat third-place Gateway (North Bay) 1125-1070 in the first game of the stepladder, then knocked off second-place Nickel District (Sudbury) 1139-1114 in their next match.
But Cambrian proved to be too much in the final, cruising to a 1121-888 victory to capture the gold medal.
Sunset Country had 59.5 points after the preliminary round, with Stamarski co-leading the charge with nine points thanks to his 243.07 average in bowling all 10 frames of all 15 games.
Neither the men’s team, which featured Ken Dick and Jamie McKenny, nor the ladies’ team, including Brenda Hanzuk, Carla Hanzuk, and Dixie McDonald, qualified for the stepladder competition in their respective divisions after the 15-game preliminary round.
McKenny, averaging 241.32, managed to earn six points overall for the men’s team, which finished the preliminary round in fifth place with 43 total points. Dick, averaging 231.44, accumulated three.
In the ladies’ division, Carla Hanzuk (averaging 198.59) tied for the lead with seven overall points in helping Sunset Country to a fifth-place finish with 44 total points.
Brenda Hanzuk, averaging 201.78, racked up five points while McDonald, with a 196.85 average, accumulated four.
McDonald and Carla Hanzuk also competed in the ladies’ singles division at North Bay. They averaged 214 and 212.2, respectively, but failed to qualify for the stepladder round.
After all the points were tallied, Sunset Country finished the tournament with 27 points in the aggregate standings, behind Cambrian North (62 points) and Nickel District (42).
Rounding out the standings were Gateway (25 points), Goldbelt (19), and North of Superior (16).
