Bonot rinks open with losses

Both local rinks lost their opening draws at the senior men’s district playdowns at the Nipigon Curladome last night.
Bryan Bonot, the two-time defending district champ, was put to bed early in his first match against Gary Ball (Sioux Lookout), falling 10-2 in just four ends.
Bonot’s rink, who won the Zone 7 playdowns here earlier this month, was down 5-2 after three ends before Ball, the 1998 district champ, put up five in the pivotal fourth to thwart their conservative play.
“We kept playing to steal one,” Bonot said this morning of their problems in the fourth end. “It just didn’t work out, we didn’t get the shots we needed. We just had a bad game.”
Bonot’s rink includes Terry Lee, Ron Martinuk, and Ted Stewart.
Meanwhile, the Nevin Bonot rink, which had been skipped by Jim Jackson at the zone playdowns here, played a back-and-forth affair with Don Macsemchuk (Kakabeka Falls) before losing 9-8.
Nevin Bonot also had problems in the fourth when he saw an early 4-1 lead disappear thanks to a five-ender by Macsemchuk.
His rink includes Jackson, Glen Jackson, and Norm Hyatt.
Bryan Bonot was to meet Lauchie Meagher (Manitouwadge) this afternoon and Frank Stocco (Longlac) tonight. Nevin Bonot faces off against Stocco and Ball.
The Bonots will face each other tomorrow.
In senior ladies’ play, Zone 7 champ Susan Clarke (Dryden) fell to 0-2 after a 12-8 loss Marion Clark (Port Arthur) and a 11-2 defeat at the hands of Sharon Giertuga (Port Arthur).
The top team in both the men’s and ladies’ divisions will advance to the provincials in North Bay on Jan. 10-12.
As previously reported, Kelly Neilson’s Stratton rink began round-robin play at the junior ladies’ district playdowns today in Balmertown (results weren’t available by press time).
