Stratton native Trevor Bonot, who now curls out of the Port Arthur Curling Club in Thunder Bay, is off to a strong start at the Northern Ontario men’s provincial championships in Nipigon.
Bonot, joined by third Al Macsemchuk, second Chris Briand, and Devlin’s Mike Badiuk at lead, is alone in second place at 2-0 heading into action this afternoon.
Defending champ Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste. Marie) sits in first place with a 3-0 record following a 7-2 win this morning over Bryan Burgess (Thunder Bay).
The Bonot rink opened round-robin play yesterday afternoon with a 11-5 victory over Matt Dumontelle (New Liskeard), breaking the game wide-open with a six-ender in the ninth.
Then in the evening draw, Bonot rallied for a 6-4 win over fellow Thunder Bay skip Jeff Currie.
After falling behind 4-2 in the fifth end, Bonot took a single with the hammer in the sixth to cut the deficit to one.
Following a blank in the seventh, Bonot stole a pair in the eighth end to take the lead.
He then wrapped up the win with another steal in the 10th.
After having a bye this morning, Bonot was facing Al Hackner (Thunder Bay) this afternoon, then will take on Robbie Gordon (Sudbury) tonight.
The round-robin is scheduled to wrap up Saturday morning, with the final set for Sunday at either 9:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. (EST), depending if any tie-breakers are needed.
The winner will go on to represent Northern Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier, which takes place March 2-10 in Edmonton.
