Trevor Bonot and his Stratton Curling Club rink find themselves right in the mix for a playoff berth at the Northern Ontario men’s provincial playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie.
Bonot, joined by third Al Macsemchuk, second Scott McCallum, and lead Tim Jewett, sported a 5-3 record heading into play today at the Soo Curlers Association, which had him tied for third with Thunder Bay’s Joe Scharf.
Mike Jakubo (Copper Cliff) led the 12-team field with a perfect 8-0 record, with defending provincial champ Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste. Marie) holding down second place at 6-2.
The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, which are set to begin tomorrow afternoon.
The last two days were very successful for the Bonot rink, winning three of their four games.
Their lone loss came yesterday afternoon against Scharf, who won 6-4 in nine ends .
But Bonot bounced back from that defeat last night by earning a 7-5 nine-end triumph over Tim Phillips (Sault Ste. Marie).
On Tuesday, the Stratton crew dumped Colin Koivula (Thunder Bay) 7-1 in six ends before knocking off David MacInnes (Timmins) 9-4 in seven.
Meanwhile, the Jeff Currie rink from Thunder Bay, which includes Devlin’s Mike Badiuk at lead, finds themselves in a must-win situation the rest of the way, sitting at 3-5 heading into today.
Currie, who also has third Dylan Johnston and second Cody Johnston on his team, has dropped his last three games to drop down in the standings after jumping out to a 3-2 start.
After a 6-3 win over Phillips in nine ends Tuesday afternoon, Currie was stunned 8-6 by Patrick Gelinas (Mattawa) that evening.
The slide then continued yesterday as Currie fell to Jakubo 6-4 in nine ends in the afternoon, then lost 8-6 to Gordon last night.
Round-robin action continued this afternoon with Bonot facing Jacobs and Currie meeting MacInnes.
Tonight’s draw will Bonot take on Jordan Chandler (Sudbury) while Currie squares off with Mike Assad (Thunder Bay).
The final round-robin games are set for tomorrow morning, with Bonot facing Gelinas and Currie battling Koivula.
