A pair of rinks with local connections earned their first wins yesterday on the opening day of action at the Northern Ontario men’s provincial playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie.
Trevor Bonot’s rink from the Stratton Curling Club and the Jeff Currie foursome from the Fort William Curling Club (Thunder Bay), which includes Devlin’s Mike Badiuk at lead, were in a log-jam with four other teams at 1-1 heading into play today.
Defending champ Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste. Marie), Mike Jakubo (Copper Cliff), and Tim Phillips (Sault Ste. Marie) were tied for first place at 2-0.
Currie and Bonot squared off in the opening draw yesterday afternoon, with the Thunder Bay crew stealing one in the 10th end to seal a 6-4 victory.
But Bonot, joined by third Al Macsemchuk, second Scott McCallum, and lead Tim Jewett, bounced back in the evening draw, stealing a deuce in the 10th to beat Mike Assad (Thunder Bay) 7-4.
Meanwhile, the Currie rink, featuring Dylan Johnston at third and Cody Johnston at second, fell 7-5 to Jordan Chandler (Sudbury) last night.
Both rinks were back in action this afternoon, with Bonot meeting Jakubo and Currie taking on fellow Lakehead curler Joe Scharf.
Tonight’s draw will pit Bonot against Robbie Gordon (Sudbury) while Currie faces Jacobs.
