The Bantam “AA” B•Macs doubled a team from Omaha, Neb. 4-2 yesterday afternoon to pull within one victory of capturing the International Falls Invitational tournament.
The 3-0 Fort squad closed out the five-team, round-robin showdown against Hibbing at noon today (the score was not available as of press time).
The team with the most points after the round-robin will be crowned the tourney champs.
Trailing 1-0 after one to Omaha, A.J. Tucker, Patrick Wensley, Kevin Webb, and Kris Esselink each scored to give the Fort squad a commanding 4-1 into the third period.
Omaha cut the gap to 4-2 late in the game, beating goalie Dustin Tkachyk, but that was as close as they would get.
The B•Macs opened the tournament Monday morning with a 9-0 rout over Brainerd, led by a four-goal, one-assist effort by Nathan Miller. Webb also scored twice while Thomas Rose, Esselink, and Andrew Bynkoski netted singles.
Tkachyk recorded the shutout in goal.
The B•Macs, who outshot Brainerd by 30-7, led 2-0 after the first and then 7-0 through two.
The B•Macs cruised to yet another lopsided victory later Monday with a convincing 9-4 win over host International Falls.
Bryce Witherspoon put the Fort up 1-0 in the first, then A.J. Tucker (two), Cole Hayward, and Ira Ottertail scored in the second to make it 5-2.
Webb, Esselink, Bynkoski, and Miller then scored in the third period to ice the victory.
Heading into today’s contest against Hibbing, the B•Macs had scored 22 goals in the tournament–an average of more than seven a game–while surrendering just six.
