Tom Grant scored three goals to pace the Dryden Hornets to a 4-2 win over the Fort Frances B•Macs “AA” hockey team in the championship game of the Pizza Hut tournament in Thunder Bay on Sunday.
The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead before Kevin Webb, assisted by Andrew Bynkoski, scored at 9:44 of the second to get the B•Macs on the board.
Thomas Rose scored the other B•Mac goal.
The B•Macs reached the final by edging the Beavers 3-2 earlier Sunday. Webb led the way with two goals (including the game-winner) and assisted on the other one by Patrick Wensley.
The Fort squad opened play Friday afternoon with a 2-2 tie against Kapuskasing (Lorne Koski and Rose scored in that one), then they beat Dryden 6-2 on goals by Marty Hanson, Webb, A.J. Tucker, Rose, Bynkoski, and Kris Esselink.
The B•Macs then blanked the Thunder Bay South Rangers 6-0 courtesy of goals by Bryce Witherspoon (two), Cole Hayward, Rose, Patrick Wensley, and Tucker.
In their first meeting against the Hornets on Saturday night, the B•Macs doubled up their Dryden counterparts 4-2. Rose (two), Wensley, and Esselink scored in that game.
The B•Macs return to action this weekend when they host an “AA” tournament at Memorial Arena.
