The local Pinewood Blades Bantam girls’ hockey team cruised to a perfect 5-0 record at the “November Chill” tournament in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
The Blades beat Marathon 4-1 in the final Sunday to claim the gold medal.
They had opened the tournament with 3-0 and 5-0 shutouts over Dryden’s two squads. Then they beat Nipigon 3-1 before closing out the round-robin portion with a 2-0 win over the previously-undefeated Ed’s Tigers (Thunder Bay).
“It was a total team effort all weekend long,” assistant coach Vince Gouin praised in an e-mail to the Times. “Coach Glen Smith and I are very proud of the way all the players stepped up and played to their potential.”
Meanwhile, Fort Frances’ other Bantam girls’ team, the Energy Fitness Wild, went unbeaten through the round-robin (2-0-2) to advance to the bronze-medal game, where they defeated the Thunder Bay Maroons 3-1 to claim third place.
Wild coach Scott Clendenning said both he and Smith were extremely pleased with their teams’ play in Thunder Bay, and how the girls showed up for every shift and every game.
