Big plays hurt ‘C’ team

The big play cost the Muskie ‘C’ football team in more ways than one last Thursday against the host International Falls Broncos.
In the first half, quarterback Andrew George was picked off near midfield and returned all the way back to the Muskie end zone for a 6-0 lead (the extra point try failed).
Then in the second half, the Muskie defence gave up a 25-yard run off left tackle for a touchdown that capped a 12-0 Bronco victory.
Still, head coach Rob Tysz said his defence played particularly well last week, giving up just the one touchdown.
But while the Broncos were making big plays, so were the Muskies. The problem was their two touchdowns–coming off long runs–were called back.
First, George turned in a magnificent effort on an 85-yard touchdown run only to have the play negated on a clipping call. Then receiver Eddie Calder hauled in a 20-yard reception from George and raced down the sidelines another 30 yards for what appeared to be a major.
But that touchdown was called back when Calder was ruled to have stepped out of bounds while avoiding a tackle.
Nonetheless, Tysz said the coaches came away with a good feeling about the game–and the team’s continued improvement–despite the loss.
“We’re teaching the kids ball,” said Tysz, whose team is 0-4-1 on the season. “Our defence played well, and the offence scored two touchdowns, but in the end we hurt ourselves with several procedure penalties that stalled drives.”
The game against the Falls was to be their last of the season but the Muskies were approached by the Broncos to play their second ‘C’ team.
That game will go this Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Bronco Stadium.
