Two perfect 10s helped the Fort Frances Her-icanes stay perfect for the season.
The ‘Canes racked up 10 runs on 10 hits in the fourth inning en route to a 17-8 win over the Dawson Tigers in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League action Monday night at VanJura.
First-place Fort Frances (5-0) scored three runs in the first, but then were held in check by Tigers’ pitcher Alicia Anderson over the next two frames while Dawson (1-4) pulled within one at 3-2.
The whole game changed in the fourth as the ‘Canes sent 15 batters to the plate.
Gina Pope and Dana Ward had two hits and two RBI apiece in the inning.
Two Pope throwing errors in the fifth and a Cass Teeple RBI groundout led to three Tigers’ runs in the fifth.
But the ‘Canes tacked on four more in the bottom of the inning to kill any rally hopes for Dawson.
Hill earned the win, with Sarah Noonan tossing two innings of relief.
Anderson took the loss for Dawson, which slipped back into the cellar after the Northwest Bay Beavers became the last team to get a win to start the season with a 13-6 victory over the Emo Renegades.
Darcy Smith earned the win for the ninth-place Beavers (1-3-2).
Mykenzie Borger took the loss for the seventh-place Renegades (2-3), who now have lost three-straight games.
The Manitou T-Birdies (2-4) fell 14-10 to the resurgent Red Gut Babes (3-3), who moved into fourth place alone after notching back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Alyssa Windego earned the win over Bev Cochrane and eighth-place Manitou, which has now lost two-straight.
The Fort Frances Mud Dogs (4-1) also are moving up the standings, settling into second place after a 16-7 win over the Couchiching Lady Raiders (2-3-1).
Rachelle Yeo got the job done for the Mud Dogs, who are on a three-game winning streak, while losing pitcher Darcy Jones and the fifth-place Lady Raiders are winless in their past three.
The game between the 10th-place Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-2) and third-place Big Grassy Lynx (3-1-1) was postponed due to Sabaskong advising ahead of time it would not have enough players available.
The sixth-place Fort Frances Angels (2-2) had the bye Monday.
Tonight’s action, which starts at 7 p.m., features the ‘Canes and Mud Dogs square off at the St. Francis Sports Field as the Mud Dogs look to forge a first-place tie with the defending champs.
Other games will see the Angels host Couchiching (also at St. Francis), Big Grassy in Emo, Red Gut visiting Sabaskong, and Northwest Bay at Dawson.
Manitou has the bye.
