Rick Neilson, a beekeeper in Rainy River District since 1976, will be conducting a “Beekeeping for Beginners” course this winter.
The Monday evening course will start on Jan. 15 and run for 10 weeks.
Pending the approval of La Vallee council, it will be held in the upstairs meeting room of the municipal office in Devlin.
“Devlin is the preferred location because it is somewhat central and will give those coming from the west end a slightly shorter drive, but still be close enough for those in town,” Neilson noted.
“There is growing interest in beekeeping and people have been suggesting that they would like to take a course,” he added.
The course will be limited to 20 people.
Along with those who are looking at a hive or two in the back yard, it is hoped there will be some interested in filling the demand for locally-produced honey.
The course will focus on the characteristics of honeybees and how to manage them to remain healthy and produce the best honey in the world.
A summer bee tour, examining and diagnosing students’ hives, will be included in the $85 course fee.
