Beavers roll to fourth-straight win


The Northwest Bay Beavers have been one of the hottest teams of late in the Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League.
Shae Smith homered to pace the Beavers to a 12-8 win over the Fort Frances Mud Dogs last night for their fourth win in a row.
Darcy Smith earned the pitching win for Northwest Bay (6-3) while Rachelle Yeo suffered the loss for the Mud Dogs (3-4-1).
In other games last night, the Renegades handed the Couchiching Raiders their first loss of the season in a 19-9 decision.
Summer Leonard homered twice while Erika Jourdain also went yard, but it wasn’t enough as the Raiders fell to 8-1.
Karma Andy nabbed the win for the Renegades (9-1) over Jenn Singleton.
Marissa Kerry cranked a homerun to pace the Fort Frances Her-icanes to a 30-0 drubbing of the Fort Frances Angels.
Mariah Leahy garnered the win for the Her-icanes (8-1) over Raelle Redford of the Angels (3-6-1).
The Red Gut Babes and host Big Grassy Lynx battled to a 15-15 tie after the came was called due to darkness.
Alyssa Windego homered twice and toed the pitching rubber for the Babes (0-5-3) while Candace Handorgan pitched for the Lynx (4-4-1).
The Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-6) forfeited their third game in a row to the Manitou T-Birdies (1-7), who picked up their first win of the season as a result.
The Dawson Tigers (2-7) had the bye.
Those games also officially mark the end of the first half of the season.
Monday and next Wednesday (June 26) will serve as make-up game nights, with second-round league play set to go on July 3.
In Rainy River District Fastball League action on Tuesday night, meanwhile, the Fort Frances Braves crushed seven homeruns as they rolled to a 19-4 rout of the Dawson Tigers.
Travis Tom homered three times, Cole Tymkin went yard twice, while Jaden Gustafson and Tim Archie also smacked round-trippers in an impressive power barrage for the undefeated Braves (8-0).
Kevin Gemmell homered twice and took the loss for the Tigers (6-3) while Tom picked up the win.
The Sabaskong Lakers cruised to a 10-0 shutout of the Northwest Bay Chieftains.
James Yerxa earned the win for the Lakers (4-5) over Braden Smith of the Chieftains (0-8).
The Barwick Blue Knights dumped the Sight & Sound Wolves 4-1.
Brandan Pratt nabbed the win for Barwick (5-4) while John Desaulniers was tagged with the loss for the Wolves (4-4).
And the Couchiching Raiders picked up their second win in a row as they dispatched the Rainy River Royals 8-3.
Mike Jourdain had the win for the Raiders (6-3) over Myron Armstrong of the Royals (5-3).
The Stratton Eagles (5-4) were awarded a 7-0 forfeit win over the Manitou Thunderbirds (2-7).
The Sabaskong Goldeneyes (2-5) at Windey’s Warriors (4-4) game was cancelled due to the Goldeneyes not having enough players.
Tonight’s games (weather permitting) will see the Eagles travel to VanJura to take on the Braves, Manitou will host Barwick, the Chieftains squaring off against the Goldeneyes, the Lakers hosting the Raiders, the Warriors making the trip to Rainy River to take on the Royals, and the Wolves will welcome the Tigers.
