Only one set of Stars could shine bright when the final curtain came down.
Kristy Dunning had three goals and an assist as the Thunder Bay Petrie Stars romped to a 6-0 shutout over the Fort Frances BDO Stars in the bronze-medal game of the Emo-Devlin-Barwick Minor Hockey Association’s PeeWee girls’ tournament Sunday at the Emo-La Vallee Arena.
Dunning opened the scoring by jumping on a turnover in the Fort zone and sliding the puck past downed BDO goalie Kylee Keith at 2:57 of the first.
She was back for more at the 12-minute mark.
Grace Cahill’s point shot was blocked by BDO’s Rebecca Jourdain, who couldn’t find the loose puck in her skates before Dunning picked it out and slammed it by Keith.
After Mikalea Green made it 3-0, Dunning completed her hat trick just seven seconds later—charging across the blueline and hammering a shot that went off the post and in.
Goals by Bria Filice in the second and Rachel Perry in the third capped Thunder Bay’s scoring, with Femke Attama posting the shutout.
BDO opened the tourney with a 2-0 shutout over the host Emo Express, with Hailie Beasant netting both goals.
BDO then was blanked 1-0 by the Lake of the Woods Ice Breakers before falling 2-1 to Thunder Bay, with Beasant notching her team’s lone marker.
Fort Frances finished round-robin play with a 2-0 loss to Dryden Petro Canada.
Emo came away in fifth spot with an 0-4 record.
Their loss to BDO was followed by a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Thunder Bay and a 6-0 blanking at the hands of Dryden Petro Canada.
The Express concluded play without a win or a goal after getting stopped 2-0 by the Lake of the Woods Ice Breakers.
The Ice Breakers won gold with a 5-3 over Dryden in the final.
