Sunny locales are a recurring theme early in Joe Basaraba’s professional hockey career.
The 18-year-old Fort Frances product was taken in the third round, 69th overall, by the Florida Panthers in the NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Basaraba scored 24 goals and 22 assists in 52 games for Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a prep school in Fairbault, Mn. last season, good for seventh in team scoring.
The former Muskie will suit up for the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the fall.
Basaraba was ranked 54th among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings released in the spring.
