Bantams to host ‘AA’ tourney this weekend

The Fort Frances ‘AA’ Bantam hockey team will host a nine-team tournament that gets underway Friday morning and wraps up Sunday afternoon.
Fort Frances–who will play in Pool ‘A’ against the Maroons, Beavers, North End, and Dryden–will open action Friday at 11 a.m., with their second game at 5 p.m.
The official opening ceremonies will be held prior to that game.
Fort Frances will round out pool play Saturday with games at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Pool ‘B’ will feature South End, Neebing, Nor-West, and Winkler.
The playoffs start Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., then wrap up Sunday with games at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and noon before the final at 2 p.m.
The Fort Bantams are coming off a tournament in Thunder Bay last weekend in which they finished with a 1-3 record.
“They played a good first game,” said team manager Ron Bridgeman. “They went downhill after that.”
The Bantams opened with a 2-1 win over APHA B on goals by Tanner Kaemingh and Ian Lockman, who netted the game-winner in the third period.
But then they fell 3-1 to the Beavers (Eric Mosbeck netted the Fort’s lone goal) and 6-3 to Neebing after giving up three unanswered goals in the final frame.
Tyler Barker, Jamie Davis, and Kyle McTavish tallied in that one.
In their final match, the Fort Bantams gave the Maroons a three-goal cushion after two periods before coming on strong in the third, only to fall 4-3.
Andrew George, Kaemingh, and Lockman were the Fort marksmen.
