The newly-formed Northwestern Ontario ‘AAA’ Bantam all-star squad made a lasting impression in their first game action here Sunday.
The team, comprised of Bantam-aged players from Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden, and Red Lake, squared off against the Fort Frances Midget ‘AA’ Canadians and claimed a 4-1 victory.
Six players who suited up for the regional team are from the local Taggs ‘AA’ squad, including Jordan Larson, Dylan Grinsell, Jacob Hawley, Tarran Romyn, Nick Kaun, and Nick Jourdain.
Jon Carlson of Taggs (currently out with a broken arm) and Robbie Rea (with the Muskies) also will be suiting up for the regional team when they meet Thunder Bay for the branch championship in March.
Larson opened the scoring on a pass from Grinsell in the second period while Dryden’s Marly Quince gave the all-stars a two-goal cushion a little later.
Tim Sharp got one back for the Canadians, but Jourdain scored another to extend the all-stars’ lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Romyn netted the lone goal of the third period—jumping in from the point and blasting a shot off the post and in.
“We try to play a couple exhibition games to get the team ready, and then we play Thunder Bay in March to try to go to the all-Ontarios,” regional co-coach Don Larson said.
“We have to go around all of our schedules so it’s kind of hard to get together, but we’ll see if we can get a few more games in before then,” he added.
