The odds are fairly good local minor hockey fans will have plenty of chances to cheer this weekend.
The Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association hosts its Bantam ‘A’ tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre, getting underway this morning and wrapping up Sunday.
The 10-team event will feature squads split into two pools for the preliminary round, with five teams from Rainy River District vying for the championship.
Pool ‘A’ includes two Fort Frances teams (Holmlund’s and Kennedy K-9’s), as well as Emo Esso and out-of-district entrants Halley’s Kamps Comets (Kenora) and the Norwest Stars (Kakabeka Falls).
Canadian Tire (Fort Frances) and the Emo Fury highlight Pool ‘B,’ which also includes the Dryden Flyers, Sioux Storm (Sioux Lookout) and Westfort Rangers (Thunder Bay).
Action began today at 9:45 a.m., the same start time as tomorrow, with the last game for both days slated for 8 p.m.
The top three teams in each pool will advance to Sunday’s three finals.
The ‘C’ final, featuring the two third-place teams, starts at 9:15 a.m., while the ‘B’ final featuring the two second-place teams goes at 10:45 a.m.
The tournament wraps up when the two pool leaders battle in the ‘A’ final at 12:15 p.m.
