‘Ball Blast’ underway tomorrow

The central event of the Fort Frances adult soccer calendar rolls into town this weekend as the annual “Borderland Ball Blast” starts tomorrow at the St. Francis Sportsfields.
Eight men’s teams and seven women’s teams, including squads from Winnipeg, Dryden, Thunder Bay, and Kenora as well as here, will square off in the three-day tournament organized by the Borderland Soccer Association.
Pool ‘A’ of the men’s division includes Gillons’ (Fort Frances), the Dryden Falcons, Thunder Bay Portuguese, and Kenora Celtic while Pool ‘B’ features Taggs and ITS (Fort Frances), along with Thunder Bay United and Thunder Bay Euro Stars.
In Pool ‘A’ of the women’s division, Curves (Fort Frances) will be joined by Gleason’s Clinic (Thunder Bay) and Basic Machining Steelers (Dryden). Gillons’ and Taggs (Fort Frances), as well as Acores (Winnipeg) and Acura Legends (Thunder Bay), make up Pool ‘B’.
Round-robin games will consist of two 30-minute halves, with the top two teams in each pool for both the men’s and women’s divisions qualifying for the playoffs.
The semi-finals on Sunday will be made up of two 35-minute halves, plus two 10-minutes “golden goal” overtime halves, if necessary.
The finals later that day will feature two 45-minute halves, with two 15-minute “golden goal” overtime halves, if necessary.
The tournament begins tomorrow at 7 p.m. with a local battle between Gillons’ and Taggs on the South pitch to start play in the women’s division.
The men will see their first action at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow when Taggs and ITS meet on the Westfort field while the Dryden Falcons and Gillons’ face off on the North pitch.
Play resumes Saturday at 8 a.m.
and will run most of the day. The playoffs then will go Sunday, also starting at 8 a.m. with the women’s semi-finals, featuring first in Pool ‘A’ versus second place in Pool ‘B’ (North) as well as first place in Pool ‘B’ against second in Pool ‘A’ (South).
At 9:30 a.m., the men take to the field, with first in Pool ‘A’ challenging second in Pool ‘B’ (North) as well as first in Pool ‘B’ taking on second from Pool ‘A’ (South).
In consolation action in the women’s division at 11 a.m., third place in Pool ‘A’ will battle third place in Pool ‘B’ (North) while the two losers of the morning’s semifinals also will square off (South).
The women’s final is set for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday on the Westfort field while, at the same time, the losers from the men’s semi-finals square off on the South field.
The men’s final is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on the Westfort field.
