In a win-or-go-home scenario, it was Mike Badiuk who had to pack to leave.
The Devlin native, playing third for Thunder Bay’s Dylan Johnston, saw his dream of a provincial crown evaporate in a 7-6 extra-end loss to Sudbury’s Mike Jakubo in a tie-breaker Saturday in Timmins.
Johnston lead 4-2 after five ends and 5-3 after seven, but watched Jakubo tie it with a deuce in the eighth and steal of one in the ninth to go up 6-5.
Then with the hammer, Johnston only could score one in the 10th.
Jakubo capitalized on last rock in the extra end to notch the single and take the win.
Johnston finished the round robin at 4-3 after beating Stratton native Trevor Bonot 6-4 and losing to Robbie Gordon (Sudbury) on Friday.
He then handed Brian Adams Jr. (Thunder Bay) his lone loss of the round-robin 7-6 on Saturday to create a three-way tie with Jakubo and Gordon.
Bonot and his rink of third Al Macsemchuk, second Chris Briand, lead Tim Jewett, and fifth Jordan Potter ended the week 1-6 with losses to Johnston and Adams Jr. (5-3) on Friday and 8-2 to Gordon on Saturday.
Thunder Bay’s Jeff Currie earned the title with a 9-4 defeat of Adams Jr. in yesterday’s final.
Currie and his rink of third Mike McCarville, second Colin Koivula, and lead Jamie Childs had finished the round-robin in second place at 5-2.
Next stop for Currie is the Tim Hortons Brier from March 1-9 in Kamloops, B.C.
