Atoms win with consistently in Dryden

Fort Frances made a solid impression at an Atom ‘A’ hockey tournament in Dryden last weekend, with the ‘A’ final being an all-local affair.
The Fireman Flames wound up beating Gillons’ 3-1 to claim the crown by going 6-0.
Faron Morrisseau and Irv Lockman led the team with seven points apiece. Robert Ellis and Alex Shoemaker each added six points while goalie Theron Holden earned three shutouts.
“They played the best hockey of their life,” said Flames coach Dennis Calder. “I’m very proud of them.”
After opening up with a 6-0 romp over the Dryden Ducks, the Flames pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Red Lake Bombers and then a 5-0 shutout over the Dryden Devils.
They blanked the Kenora Hawks 6-0 to wrap round-robin play before downing Green’s (Fort Frances) 3-0 in the ‘A’ semi-final.
Gillons’ went 4-1-1 over the weekend, beating the Dryden Avalanche 7-2 and the Red Lake Rockets 1-0 before tying the Kenora Senators 3-3 on a goal by Matt Hebert with four seconds to go.
They went on to double Sioux Lookout 4-2 and then blank the Westend Bruins (Thunder Bay) 2-0.
Hebert led all goal scorers on the team with eight while Joe Basaraba added three. Brandon Legarie earned both shutouts between the pipes.
Green’s earned a 4-1 record en route to their top four finish while Causeway (Fort Frances) finished at 3-1, falling to the Rockets in the ‘B’ semi-final.
“I’m happy to say it was a dominating display by Fort Frances teams throughout the whole weekend,” said Gillons’ coach Gord McCabe.
The Atoms will play in their home tournament Jan. 25-27.
Meanwhile, the Sunset Country Ford Mustangs ‘AA’ Atoms are itching to get back to action. They’re heading to Thunder Bay for the Robin’s Donut Invitational, which gets underway tomorrow night.
The local KC PeeWee ‘AA’ squad also are going to Thunder Bay. The annual Robin’s tourney welcomes more than 100 teams in six different age categories.
The Tagg’s ‘AA’ Bantams will be in Roseau, Mn. for a tournament this weekend.
