A weekend excursion to Devlin was fruitful for the Atikokan Grade 8 boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams as they won their respective championships at the Crossroads Tornadoes invitational tournament, co-hosted by Crossroads School and Naicatchewenin.
The boys’ squad outlasted five other teams to finish first in their round-robin pool, followed by St. Francis, Crossroads, and Mine Centre. That set up a meeting in the final between the top two teams, with Atikokan sweeping the best-of-three match.
Game scores were 25-22 and 25-21.
Crossroads beat Mine Centre for the bronze medal (game scores were not available).
Meanwhile, the eight-team girls’ portion of the tournament saw Atikokan take first in Pool ‘A,’ followed by the Dryden Whiskey Jacks ‘A’ squad. In pool ‘B,’ it was Crossroads taking top spot while the Whiskey Jacks ‘B’ squad was second.
The final saw Atikokan send the home team packing in a tense 2-1 victory in their best-of-three final by scores of 26-24, 20-25, and 16-14.
The Dryden ‘B’ team upset their ‘A’ team counterparts in two-straight games to win the bronze medal (game scores were not available).
This Saturday will see the biggest volleyball tournament of the year in the Rainy River District Athletic Association, the Bantam championships, which will be held at four separate locations.
Teams will participate at either St. Francis School, St. Michael’s School, Robert Moore School, and the Couchiching Recreation Centre. The last two facilities will serve as the host sites for the tournament playoffs.
The finals are scheduled for around 3 p.m.
